"how do you just know this" is a question I get asked a lot, because I tend to be someone who can contribute unusual facts or insight on whatever topic a casual conversation turns to, and I never know how to answer because "I pay attention" sounds rude and isn't super actionable. but that is really it, I just take an active interest when I encounter something curious or unusual.

like recently one of my friends linked me a funny paragraph from a very badly written erotic novel. it was so bad that I thought "I wonder if this is real", so we looked up the book it was from and learned it was a vintage horny housewife type story by someone who wrote a lot of shitty cheap porn back in the 80s, all of which now seems to be completely out of print.

in the course of googling the author, I discovered that one of their works had been cited in a 2004 court case over a prisoner's right to keep erotic novels in his personal library after the prison confiscated them. a bit more googling turned up the case details in a legal database. the guy had received the books by mail and kept them, among others, in his cell. the prison seized them, citing a policy against prisoners having pornography. his lawyers argued that 1. erotic novels are distinct from pornography because they have artistic and expressive content beyond the depiction of sex acts, and 2. since he received them by mail they are therefore protected under his constitutional right to freely access non-disruptive information from outside the prison. I don't know if he got his books back, but he won his case.

then we googled the defendant and found out he was in prison for helping a woman to drug and murder his boss (who she lived with), mutilate the body with acid and dump him in a ravine.

anyway my point is, take an interest. that's how you learn weird stuff.

My friends who just got their first glasses: i need this highly expensive special cloth to wipe them, I also have this eyeglass cleaner from the same company, did you know you shouldn't use your t shirt unless it's specifically soft

Me who's worn glasses since middle school: *slaps soap onto the glasses and washes them in the sink then wipes them with toilet paper* what

PSA, there's a really nasty Discord scam going around rn. If one of your friends DMs you, starting off with a simple "hello" "how are you", may even joke around a little, and then starts asking you to look at a game/project they're working on, don't click the link, don't download anything. If you can reach that friend through non-Discord means, reach out and let them know they got hacked.

One of my friends said the link takes them to a very convincing video game page that has in-game screenshots and stuff, and then gives you an option to download a playtest zip file or something. That download exploits a weakness Discord apparently has for password protected zip files and steals your Discord log-in and changes your account info to the scammer's account info. Two of my friends lost their accounts. Be careful.

Slight adjustment to this... Apparently the virus scrapes all your passwords and files on your computer, not just Discord... It just uses Discord to gain access... Friend had a picture of his license saved on his computer, and apparently the scammers even got their hands on that... So it's a nasty little hack...

It's ILOVEYOU again

except stakes are higher this time because instead of destroying data malware authors learned they can profit more from stealing data and accounts instead.

(the "exploits a weakness Discord apparently has for password protected zip files" sounds like bullshit though: the reason you get sent a password protected archive is so the contents can't be examined (e.g. through malware scanners) without manual intervention, a.k.a. you actually unpacking it on your machine, therefore any password protected archive should be a red flag)

I wrote an announcement back in the day on my server, and I'm gonna repeat it here:

Do not join in random servers, even when the person inviting you is trustworthy. Do not download applications (this includes "playtesting a game for a friend") and run them on your computer because an application you run can do every action you can do, including reading your files and access tokens. Scanning a QR code with Discord sends the access token that specifically bypasses 2FA to the address the QR code is representing, which means scanning a QR code with Discord provided by someone else than the Discord log in screen will hack your account. A random Nitro gift is very likely to be a hack, rather than an actual invite. Steam support will never contact you on Discord regarding your "reported Steam account". Do not log in into Discord if you already are logged into Discord, because you're likely entering your discord credentials into some unrelated site.

Failure to adhere is how you lose access to your Discord account, and your account will be used to send direct messages in order to convince other people to do the actions described above. If that happens your account will be kicked from the server. Feel free to rejoin after you regain control over it.

If something sounds too suspicious or too good to be true, assume it is.

THIS HAPPENED TO MY FRIEND, NOT THE GAME PART BUT THE HACKING PART.

I'm a survivor of the terror attacks who lived 4 blocks east of the World Trade Center. I lost my home that day, spent years homeless and destitute, and I carry a Zadroga Act diagnosis of 9/11-connected PTSD. If anyone who's doing this RP needs character coaching or if you need help with authentic scenarios, I'm available for consulting services at reasonable rates. DM me here or leave your number on the men's room wall at any leather bar and it'll get to me in 24 hours. Happy 9/11 y'all, and remember fireworks are unsafe and illegal in most jurisdictions.

Just looked up what time I was born and I'm so relieved that I can finally clear some things up! For those who have been asking, I'm an INTJ sun and an ENFP moon.

While I profoundly dislike astrology I can recognize that the vast majority of people who are into astrology are probably just having fun.

MBPI is a different story. If you're someone who is really into your Meyers Briggs type and are, like, assigning celebrities Meyers Briggs types you are exhibiting Behaviors (tm) that tell me you are at all times five seconds away from recommending that I watch a video on body language analysis.

ms-demeanor

Being really into MBPI types is like saying you think astrology is bullshit so you rely on scrying to get a feel for new people.

"I'm an INTJ so I'm suuuuuper unbiased and rational."

I do not think those words mean what you think they mean.

I had an employer that made us do those tests. Like they paid a company real money to analyze all of us and tell us what our strengths and weaknesses were.

I purposefully picked all the "wrong" answers to avoid getting the one I always get (INFP or whatever the 'mediator' is), and I wound up with the 'executive' (I don't recall the designator). The one that's good at administration and keeping everyone around them on task no matter what.

And despite having worked with me for five years and knowing I was an absolute chaos gremlin (thanks, undiagnosed ADHD) my supervisor was like, "Oh wow, yeah, you totally are. I see it now. We should reassign you."

Like Karen (her actual name), I just took the equivalent of a Buzzfeed personality test rooted in white supremacy and eugenics. For the love of god, do not restructure the company based on this. Just ask me my star sign and project your biases onto me like a normal person.
